Eureka! Copper Canyon 1312 – Tent – sleeps 8

During any year there are many new family camping tents released onto the market. These new tents incorporate the latest advances in tent design and fabric technology in order to make the camping experience better. I often receive emails from people asking which tent they should choose from the myriad of tents that are available.

Obviously the exact model depends on the number of people the tent should sleep but I can always give an answer which range to choose from. There is no doubt in my mind taking into consideration overall design, quality of materials and ease of use that the Copper Canyon series of family tents made by Eureka are the ones to go for. I have already reviewed the Eureka! Copper Canyon 1512 12-person tent and so I thought it was high time to take a look at the Copper Canyon 1312.

Taking into account the fact that discounts are available I would say that this tent represents the best value family tent on the market at this time

Eureka! Copper Canyon 1312 Tent review highlights:

  • Easy setup by one person
  • Easy to move when assembled
  • 156-square-foot cabin-style tent provides room for 8 campers
  • The vertical walls provide maximize room
  • Two D-shaped doors permit private entry into each room
  • Manufactured from 1200mm, 75D polyester
  • Weighs only 37 lbs

Eureka! Copper Canyon 1312 – Everything You Want in a Family Camping Tent

You could spend hours deliberating over which family tent to buy but I’m sure that when you see what the Copper Canyon 1312 offers, you will agree that it has just about everything you could ever need. For starters, Eureka! has an excellent reputation for tents that have real quality as well as innovative design. After all, there is no point in having a great looking tent if the materials are not the best or if the craftsmanship is bad. With Eureka! tents you will find that all seams are double stitched and many of them are taped. Zippers are heavy duty, but that is not to say you don’t have to look after them. You will see the occasional review that is critical of the zippers but all you need to do is to make sure you keep them straight and take a little care. There is no difference between their zippers and those of other manufacturers.

The tents that you might be comparing against the Copper Canyon 1312 are the Wenger Lugano and the Columbia Cougar Flats. There are many areas where in my opinion the Eureka! tent is superior. For instance the vertical walls make it very spacious and you can walk around without having to stoop and the doors are large; the center height is 7′-3″. All this space easily allows you to fit for example two jumbo cots and two smaller cots, a table and all your equipment without feeling cramped at all. Alternatively you can easily fit two queen size air mattresses.

While it is designed to sleep 8, this would require 8 cots with no space for anything else. It depends on your personal preferences when camping. Inside there are hooks for gear lofts, bags and lights.

From the outside I think the Copper Canyon 1312 looks great too.

As With All Eureka! Tents it’s Easy to Set Up

You will find that setup is a breeze. You can complete the job on your own inside 15 minutes with a little practice. The shock corded poles, (in other words tent poles that are made in sections held together by an elastic cord that runs through the poles), are very easy to put together. The best thing to do is lay everything out before you start. Also take note of how the tent comes out of the bag so that you can use the reverse process to put them back in.

One feature I love about the Copper Canyon 1312 is that you can move it after it has been assembled. If you are unhappy with the original pitch you can simply take out the stakes and move it to another position. It has an excellent size to weight ratio that makes it both easy to carry and to move once setup.

Stands Up to All Weathers

Whereas most people stay indoors with the arrival of bad weather, I am invariably setting up one or two tents to see how they cope. This is a great way of not only making sure you know how to set the tent up but also to check for leaks or problems due to high winds. Obviously I only do this when reviewing new tents but I would definitely recommend this before setting out on every trip because you never know if a part of the tent was damaged when you last used it.

This Eureka! tent when new will easily withstand 40mph winds and driving rain even without any seam seal. In the cold the tent holds its heat well. The power port also makes it very convenient to supply a tent heater if the temperature outside drops into the 30′s. In the heat of the day the large zippered windows are ideal for allowing plenty of ventilation while the screens keep out the insects.

I would recommend replacing the supplied stakes with heavy duty stakes. I would recommend this with every tent on the market, so it is not unusual that the stakes that come with a tent could do with being more rugged.

A Great Tent for a Great Price

This is a spacious 156 sq. ft. tent that will last you and your family for years. The cabin style will give you much more usable space than you would get with a typical dome tent design. The 75D StormShield polyester fly not only provides full protection against the weather but also features clear panel skylights, through which you can stargaze.

There are two D-shaped doors that come with side flaps that allow for private entry into each room. The doors have large zippers with covers for maximum protection against the weather.

Plenty of light and ventilation is provided by the 6 large zippered mesh windows. The windows can be closed when you need privacy.

The poles are made from steel and fiberglass poles to provide the utmost durability. The frame clips, ring and pin assemblies and the pole sleeves allow for easy set up…Find out more

A Guide to the Different Parts of a Camping Tent

I know that many people are unsure of some of the parts of a tent or some of the terms used generally in association with tents or camping. This can make it difficult to read reviews and for example, to appreciate that what one person might see as a problem isn’t for someone else.

The “poles” of a tent are the usually made of metal and form the basic structure for keeping the tent up. In family tents the vertical poles are joined together using horizontal poles to form a living area with side walls. The poles are usually mande from aluminum but can be made from other strong synthetic materials.

The “flysheet” is a waterproof cover that is used to protect the inner parts of the tent from the weather. In particular is providess protection from the wind and rain. When you see a reference to “inner tent”, this means the part of the tent that is covered by the fly sheet. The inner tent is not waterproof and allows for reasonable ventilation.

Some inner tents come as one part with material on the floor. Whether or not they have a floor it is a good idea to use a “ground sheet.” This is made from thick waterproof material to stop damp coming into the inner tent…Read More

coleman weathermaster screened 6 tent

Coleman WeatherMaster Screened 6 Family Tent

As usual at this time of the year, people are starting to think about camping and I’ve had a bunch of friends ask me which tents I would recommend for families. They know that I do reviews and as it happens this was a good time to ask because I was just beginning a series of reviews of the best family camping tents.

When I had completed my research I compiled a list of all the main features so that I could do a quick comparison of what I considered to be the top 10 family camping tents. I could then let them know which tent I would recommend in each price range. There is no doubt that the family tent under review here, the WeatherMaster Screened 6 Tent is the best in its class.

As with any tent manufactured by Coleman, in addition to the quality there are some very good savings available.

If you find this report useful, make sure you post a comment if you have any views on this tent.

What I liked most of all about the WeatherMaster Screened 6 Family Tent:

  • Can be assembled by one person
  • Space for up to 6 people sleeping in 2 rooms
  • Comfortable and roomy interior with a 17′x9′ footprint and 6’4″ center height
  • Screen room provides improved ventilation for warm summer days
  • Design uses the WeatherTec System that Coleman guarantees to keep you dry
  • Unique Coleman Comfort System allows control of airflow with adjustable ventilation

First Off - Assembly is Very Easy

Imagine you arrive at the camp site half an hour before dusk after a 10 hour drive and there’s a bit of rain in the air. What you need now is a tent that you can assemble quickly and with the least effort. The Coleman WeatherMaster Screened 6 Family Tent is one of the easiest tents to set up that you will ever come across. You can certainly do it on your own but as with everything an extra pair of hands makes things even quicker.

When you prepare the tent for assembly you will see that the sturdy and durable poles are painted and well marked to make it as easy as possible to put together. There are four U-shaped pole structures that you start with when you make up the framework for the tent. Once you have connected the side poles and have all the pole sections in place you simply raise each one in turn and place the bottom ends into the friction-cleat at the bottom edge of the tent. The process from roll-out to having all four poles raised takes only 5 minutes if you have done it before - you did practice at home didn’t you?

Once the tent part is up and staked you then put the rain-fly on, followed by the rods for the door and awnings.

Taking the tent down again is a breeze and everything goes into the bag so easily. There are many tent manufacturers that cause a lot of frustration by providing an inadequate bag but Coleman certainly come up trumps here once again.

Great Features Including the Excellent Hinged Door

You will never have any problems with light as there are lots of windows. They all have zippered flaps though when you need your privacy. For convenience there is a built-in mesh pocket. There is a small, semi-circular opening on the back wall which is the “Cool-Air port” and is useful for helping with air-flow.

At first glance the hinged door might not seem to be something that is particularly useful but believe me, you will be so glad you have it. You will also find many other campers will comment on it as they see you slip in and out of the tent without zipping. At night of course you need to zip up the door but it’s great for daytime use.

Nice Interior with Lots of Room

This tent is nice and high and is great to walk around in even for tall people, indeed the center height is 6’4″. The sleeping room is a nice size for two adults and a queen-sized air bed fits in perfectly with space to spare. The middle room is adaptable to your needs. On the one hand it will comfortably sleep an entire family, or it could act as your living room or a place to store gear.

The screened porch is the perfect place to relax, nap or read on those sunny days and to escape from the bugs in the evenings.

The Ideal Tent - Coleman WeatherMaster Screened 6 Family Tent

The versatile tent is perfect for family car campers and scout leaders or for those extended camping excursions. The WeatherMaster Screened 6 with its footprint of 17′x9′ will sleep up to 6 people comfortably in two rooms. The unique Coleman Comfort System provides control of airflow using Variflo adjustable ventilation. This family camping tent is the one to get…Buy Coleman WeatherMaster Screened 6 Tent

Top 10 Family Tents Video Review:

Family Camping Tents - How Large a Tent Do You Need?

When you are a large family going on a camping trip you need to consider carefully how big a tent to buy. You also need to think about whether you need separate rooms for convenience or additional privacy.

Manufacturers such as Coleman, Wenzel, Eureka and others make several designs of large tents. You can find some that have 3 rooms and which will house 14 people or more. The choice of tent depends a lot on the make up of your group and how many adults, couples, children and pets you have.

Whether you are purchasing a brand new or your very first tent you must make certain that the size is big enough to fit the size and number of people which will be sleeping in it as many a camping trip has been made difficult by lack of sleeping space. Another point to look into is whether or not the tent has rooms which are divided out. This feature, when camping with various families or with kids is a necessity for privacy from the other family members or for parents…Read More
